Planting amaryllis bulbs
The amaryllis prefers a position with plenty of light, preferably sun. Amaryllis blooms at a temperature between 15 and 25 degrees. Use humus-rich potting soil with organic fertiliser. Use a pot that is not too big, with about two centimetres of space around the bulb. The amaryllis can be placed in the garden in summer but is not hardy.
Different types of amaryllisses
We offer a wide range of amaryllis bulbs in different varieties, such as double- or single-flowered amaryllises in white, pink, red and multi-coloured. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for instance size, flowering period, colour, group or height.
History of the Amaryllis
The scientific name of the Amaryllis is Hippeastrum. There are about 70 to 75 species and more than 600 hybrids and cultivars. The amaryllis originates in the (subtropical) areas from Mexico and the Caribbean to the north of Argentina. The botanical name Hippeastrum is a Latinised Greek for "horseman's star" and was chosen by William Herbert in 1821.
