Planting anemone bulbs

The Anemone coronaria is not hardy and should therefore be planted in the spring, as soon as the risk of frost has passed. To enable the Anemone coronaria bulbs to take root properly, it is advisable to soak them in water for about 12 hours first. The hardy tbulbs then absorb the water. After planting, it takes about 8 to 10 weeks before you see the first flowers.

History of the Anemone

There are about 120 species of anemones. Most anemone species are tubers, but there are also species with rhizomes. The anemone is native to Southern Europe and Asia. Around 1650, it was already cultivated on a large scale in Europe, mainly by French growers. Carolus Clusius introduced this crop to the Netherlands over 400 years ago, but other sources say that the Crusaders brought them already. The name anemone is derived from the Greek word 'anemos', which means wind. The flowers move at the slightest breeze. Another story is that Anemona was a nymph at the court of the goddess Flora. According to the legend, Floras Zephyr, the god of the wind, fell in love with Anemona and the jealous goddess turned her into a flower. And then there is the story that the name Anemones originated from the Greek and Latin corruption of the Semitic name of Adonis. The species of anemone in the Middle East is said to have sprung from his blood.
